Mark Lowrie wins Petplan Veterinary Awards, Vet of the Year 2022

30th March 2022

Mark-Lowrie-with-Zoe-LyonsWe are absolutely thrilled to announce that Mark Lowrie, Specialist in Veterinary Neurology and Clinical Director here at Dovecote Veterinary Hospital, has won Petplan’s Vet of the Year 2022 award for his outstanding work and dedication to his patients, clients and colleagues.

Mark was one of three shortlisted for Vet of the Year, chosen from thousands of nominations. The winners were announced at the Petplan Veterinary Awards black tie event in Manchester, on 24th March, which Mark attended along with his wife.

We asked Mark what this award means to him; “Being recognised for this major award has been both an extremely exciting and humbling experience. I must express my gratitude to all who have been a part of my achievements and to recognise those still working hard to improve veterinary health and to make it a better place for pets of all kinds. I cannot think of a single important achievement in my life that I could have done alone and I want to profusely thank my wife and soul mate for standing by me and supporting me – she is the real achiever here. The dedicated and hard-working team of Dovecote have all played their part in this award and I would not have been able to do it without them.

Mark adds; “I really hope I can give this award justice and continue in my work in improving pet healthcare, supporting colleagues, providing affordable healthcare to all that seek it and motivating the students and new-graduates within the veterinary profession to achieve their full potential.

“There is a bit of a myth that neurology only involves expensive MRI workup but I like to educate the owners I see to inform them of the reasons why MRI may or may not be necessary. Doing this results in many owners that are referred to me leaving having just paid a consult fee and a far better understanding of their pet’s condition when they were expecting to spend a significant amount more. This is something I am passionate about promoting as it is easy to get into the trap of performing a scattergun approach to diagnostics with multiple tests when a targeted diagnostic plan can lead to a similar outcome and a happier pet (as testing can be stressful for them)”.

The whole team is delighted for Mark and immensely proud. Nominations for the Petplan awards are made by clients, colleagues and the general public, and this year we believe that Petplan received over 22,000 nominations over its five categories, which illustrates what a fantastic achievement this is for Mark.

  • I just wanted to say how amazing Kimberly was today with me and my dog Rolo. She could see how upset I was, made me feel at ease and reassured me that Rolo would be okay. Her level of professionalism and kind nature helped me get through a difficult day

  • I work as a registered vet nurse and had to come to Dovecote with my dog Alfie. I was squeezed in and was seen promptly by Sergio right after a long operation. He was so kind to Alfie and explained everything to my mom (who is not vet trained) and did Alfie’s MRI there and then even though it was going to make it a late finish. Unfortunately we had to make the call to put my lovely boy to sleep and Sergio and the nurses were really kind and helpful. I received your lovely card today and want to thank you all for your help and seeing him so quickly. I will be forever grateful.

  • The Supervets of the north!

  • Lovely, caring staff, who go the extra mile. Wouldn’t go anywhere else.

  • Everyone has always been so kind and Charlie absolutely loves his visits. The receptionists are particularly wonderful and are always on hand with a box of tissues for the numerous tears we’ve shed.

  • Really good consultation with neurologist Sergio today with CT and MRI scan. Very well organised with helpful, professional staff.

  • Whole team were welcoming and made myself and my cat feel very comfortable! Mark Lowrie is fantastic!! Thank you for coping with me as a worried owner!

  • Receptionists, physio, nurses and vets were all fantastic, every single member of staff is worth their weight in gold.

  • Think ‘The Supervet’ and that’s the level of care and professionalism. Highly recommend

  • I had a very positive experience at Dovecote. I met the vet that day that was going to perform my dog’s surgery and I was immediately put at ease by his professional, friendly and caring consultation. All the staff I came in contact with were lovely, from the welcoming reception staff to the nurses I kept ringing through the evening! My dog is now back to her normal naughty self, I can’t thank them enough.
